INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL RELATED FACTORS ON PUPILS’ PERFORMANCE IN KCPE EXAMINATIONS IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN MERU MUNICIPALITY, MERU COUNTY, KENYA

ABSTRACT

Examination results provide a framework for establishing about how students fare in schools, and constant standard to which all students are held. A person who is successful in education plays an important role in nation building. The purpose of this study was to determine the school factors influencing pupils‟ performance in KCPE in public primary schools in Meru Municipality, Meru County, Kenya. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The target population was 809 respondents, comprising of 182 teachers and 627 standard eight pupils in the 13 public primary schools in Meru Municipality. The sample size was made up of  302, who were,  276  standard eight pupils, 13 standard eight class teachers and 13 headteachers.  The instruments for data collected were questionnaires. The validity of instruments was established through piloting and expert opinion. Cronbach Alpha formula was used to test reliability of instruments.  The data collected was cleaned,

coded and then analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 18.0. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics which included mean, frequencies and percentages and presented in tables and figures. The findings revealed that school related factors influenced  pupils‟ performance in KCPE in Meru Municipality    and that the    pupils‟ performance in KCPE has been persistently below the average  for a period of    nine years.  The  study  recommends that the Teachers Service Commission, The School Management Committees and the teachers to put measures in place to mitigate the school related factors against affecting the performance of students
